Many of the rankers had him outside the top 5 for the past couple of weeks, but with this last performance he undoubtedly earned that #1 spot. I don't care what type of league you're in he got you mega-points, 11 receptions for 201 yds and 2 td's, 1 two-point conversion. Those are elite numbers there my friend.

White is more talented than people give him credit for. He has great hands, amazing awareness on the field and his breakaway speed is deceptively fast. This was a big game for Atlanta since they now clinched the #1 spot in the NFC South, and it was nice to see Ryan and White playing like it was.

Check out some of the highlights from week 7...

From a fantasy perspective White is even more attractive because the schedule gets a lot easier, facing the Bucs week 8, Ravens week 9, and the Rams week 10. So if you own White you have a must start elite receiver that will help get you to the playoffs.

Gorrillaz: Plastic Beach

This 2010 release caught me by surprise with how well it was put together. Very polished and extremely catchy, it’s one of those albums that you can listen to from beginning to end and don’t want it to end.
Each song is different and makes it a really interesting listening experience, especially for the first listen.
The album crosses genre’s with Stylo which features one of my favorite artists of all time Mos Def, to Empire Ants which a synth happy ethereal quality. to Welcome to the World of Plastic Beach, which features Snoop Dog and some soul dub that makes for an interesting collaboration.
It’s easy to read too much into this album, but it’s hard not to really get into it. It’s very unique and has convinced me that Damon Albarn is a genius with the way he sandwiches amazing 70’s soul, with 80’s synths and 2010 beats. Fantastic album that is at the top of my 2010 list at the moment. Get Gorillaz - Plastic Beach here!!<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=lifetheintean-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B003A9OVS0" style="border-style: none ! important; Lead singer Ben Knox Miller has a very dynamic range going from a deep whisper to a clean falsetto, while the accompaniment is extremely diverse with instruments ranging from a host of different strings, horns, wood blocks and echoing cell phones.

The style is hard to place, it seems to be a mixture of Folk, Americana, and some Rock influences but definitely has an old time feel to it. This was a welcomed change from the indie rock/pop kick that I've been into recently and was very nice to cleanse the musical palette with this album.

In 2009 they had a very successful year playing at some very notable venues like SXSW, Lollapalooza and the Glastonbury Festival.

This album is a must have and was one of my favorites this year.

New Toy

Just got a new iPod touch! I've listened to hours and hours of music that broke barriers, pushed limits and brought artistry back to the scene. Here are a few of my picks for best album of 2009.

5. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
Everyone underestimates Mos Def and then he goes and puts together yet another amazing album. He's got this new style India vibe on his background tracks, and he spits out amazing Buddha-like knowledge on the masses. He truly is a modern day poet that elevates rap and blazes trails for rappers that want to rap about real life, not the media concocted reality that rap is all about now.

4. Girls - Album
These guys are crazy good. The whole album has really unique feel with a mashup of genres, and you can really hear Beach Boys and Elvis Costello influences but it's done up with an indie pop vibe. It's a must listen to album. Oh yeah, and it's about girls.

3. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
As candy coated this is, it still has musical chops. I get blissed out every time I listen to this album. Very pop, but very artistic at the same time.

2. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
Along with having the surprising video I've seen all year, they are surprisingly one of my favorites. It's a perfect album. Every sound from vocal, to synth to ambient background is in the right place and makes for a very polished experience. Some say that some songs are boring but you have to take the whole album into account, and it really works from the first to last track.

1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
This is the most original album I've heard in a decade. Each song on the album seems to have it's own feel and it's hard to pick a genre for it because of it's ultimate diversity. If you haven't listened to this album from first to last track then your are missing out on an awesome music experience.

I hope you liked the list and don't forget to buy music to help support bands that create art and help music progress and evolve.

You Fail!

Accessibility Fail!

Looks like they've got the top minds working there. And I know what you're thinking. "Are you crazy?" is the first thing that comes out of people's mouth after I told them. And after I told them that I traded him TJ Houshmandzadeh and Reggie Bush their confusion turns to anger. But looking at the big picture this will help me and all the other team managers in my league. Here's the logic on why I made this trade.

The Playing Field
When making a trade like this you have to consider the roster of the player that you're trading with. The teams that many owners would look to trade with would be ones that have a monster player or players that will be beneficial to you, and in this case most likely a RB/WR with the receiver being lesser caliber, or a QB if you've had an injury or drafted Oakland's JaAwfull Russell as your starting QB. Looking at their squad you have to gauge what this trade will do to the total outcome of the game, taking playoffs and Superbowl into account.

That being said I chose to trade with a person that had a 1-5 record. I looked at his squad and realized that even though he would now have an elite WR, there wouldn't be the possibility of overpowering his team, no matter how good of a game Moss has.

I also took into account the value of each position. The WR position has a extremely small elite group, a very small tier 1 group, a huge tier 2 group, and even larger tier 3 group. That being said, to get the same value in a trade offering Randy Moss I would have to get an elite RB and a tier 1 or tier 2 receiver. The only ones who could afford to do that trade would be teams that drafted exquisitely and have the players to burn. But honestly if someone drafted that well then they wouldn't need to do the trade in the first place. So I settled for a lesser trade that gave me value later in the season rather than making a good team stronger that could ruin my playoff run.

Randy Moss for TJ Houshmandzadeh and Reggie Bush

I know it sounds crazy, but I don't like Randy Moss this year. He's been under performing and Brady hasn't been looking good against decent defenses. He's been throwing short yardage throws probably because he hears footsteps and doesn't want another injury. That's why Welker is a much better option for the long term on New England.

Housh has a very nice schedule for the rest of the year with teams lousy against the pass. Arizona, Dallas, Detroit, Arizona, Minesota, and St. Louis, San Fransico, Houston, Tampabay and Greanbay. The only ones that have a significant pass rush are Arizona, Minesota, and Greenbay. And I would probably sit him for those matchups.

Reggie Bush is good for a PPR league and now that Pierre Thomas is back he will be a much sneakier option for the high powered New Orleans offense.

The Outcome

In retrospect I should have waited another week to do the trade because the Patriots were up against the 0-5 Titans. But it did prove my point. Randy Moss had a blowout game and got 39.90 fantasy points in an epic win, but the owner who I traded to lost. I predicted the loss, the crystal ball has spoken.

And by the way, if Moss peaks at 39.90 against the horrible Titans then it's unlikly he will have very many +20pt games after their bye week.

I ended up okay on my end. I ended up starting Housh against the Cardinals for some strange reason, but I forgot that while their pass coverage is awful, their pass rush is good. Hasselbeck got shut down, but the outlook is positive for the rest of the season for Housh. Reggie Bush (didn't start) managed to get 9.82 against a staunch Giants defense, but looked to solidify his role as the runner/receiver and that's all I was looking for in this game. I'll give another update at the end of the season.

Shenanigans!

Embedded video from CNN Video

I call shenanigans on this family. There have been many useless apps that have fallen by the wayside, but I've really been getting into Blip.fm and have been giving it a serious workout.

If you're not familiar with Blip.fm it's a micro-blogging app related to music. You're the DJ and the public is your audience. When you sign up you fill out a few songs that you like and then you get assigned some DJ's that have similar musical interests, after that you choose songs that you like and they go into a public page where the entire Blip.fm sees them and listens. If they like your song they will give you props and start following you if they like your style.

Blip.fm does it right when it comes to props. You start out with 10 credits to give props, and you gain a credit every time someone gives you a prop. Smart idea because this prevents people from randomly giving out props to everyone, and since they have to post good music to get props it gives the system a bit more credibility.

It nice to have this kind of musical sharing and discussion and it's highly addictive. So try it out and make sure to follow me.

Grow Your Own Air

Kamal Meattle has some intriguing ideas and great research to back it up. Here are some things that I've learned that if everyone implemented, would make the world a far better place.

1. Treat your body well.
I know what you're thinking... It took me 29 years to figure this one out? Well apparently I was a late adopter of this theory but now realize it's importance. Everyone has heard the saying "You are what you eat". Well, up until a year ago my stomach was beer, my legs were potato chips and my ass was Burger King. I started exercising and biking and eating better, and now I am in better shape than I've been in years. Being unhealthy makes life horrible, you become lazy, you get sick often and get into a general funk. How will this help the world? Well, if everyone rode their bike to work then we wouldn't be as reliant on gas, the environment would be cleaner, health insurance costs would be down. You name it.

2. You don't know everything, and you are not always right.
The ego doesn't want this statement to be true, but it is. Humans are very similar to computers, they operate on the information that they are given and will use that information until they error out, or are reprogrammed. Well, I'm sorry to say the information that you know is not 100% accurate, so it's necessary to compare the knowledge that you have against any theory that is proposed to you based on the current facts. This is important for the evolution of thought. If everyone thought this way then we would progress in every aspect of life ranging from communications to personal and professional relationships, to breakthroughs in conventions and the like.

3. Listen to understand, not just to respond.
Now this is a broad generality, but I feel most people listen to respond instead of understand. It's ingrained in our culture. You hear the person talking, you get the basic gist of what they're going for and then before they even stop you're preparing a response. And it's usually includes the letter I, and what your experiences have been. The funny part is that your experiences and advise may not be what this person needs. Maybe they need to be listened to, and understood. Forget about being master of the universe (having the responsibility to solve the worlds problems) and understand how they must feel and let them vent. Let them come up with their own solutions.

4. It doesn't have to be this way, you can change anything.
If no one has told you yet, I will. You can change anything and everything. You have control over your universe. You have control over your relationships, your jobs, your happiness, everything. If you are in a bad relationship, leave. If you have a shitty job, find a better one. If you are bored pick up a hobby. You can change anything.

5. Don't do things for others, do everything for yourself.
I help lots of people out with things. Donating time, energy, knowledge is what I've done for years and I never expect anything in return. I help people out for myself, it makes me feel good, appreciated and useful. Obviously it's nice to help people out just to be nice, but I gain something every time I go help another human out. And Karma has a good way of coming back, so try it and see how it feels.

6. Do everything with quality in mind.
Quality seems to be less of a priority then it was in the past. Whatever you do, do it well. Take your time. You only live life once, you have time to do things well even if it takes you a long time. Do you want to look back at your life when you're on deaths door and wonder why you half-assed everything? There is a reason that there is antique furniture from 200 years ago still around, and the chair you bought from Walmart won't last one.

7. Learning never stops, read often, research things you want to know
Learning is forever. To progress in your job you will be constantly learning, studying and evolving. The same is true for life. I love the fact that I can learn anything I want to learn, read about other's peoples experiences, look at history through learned eyes. It's amazing, and the world could use more knowledgeable people. Pick up a book on anything that you're curious about.

8. Trust your insticts, they are usually right.
The mind and soul have great ways off predicting the future, and that is your instinct. People have turned a blind eye to a very important survival mechanism which is the instinct. There will be people that you come across that cannot be trusted and you will warn yourself. There are opportunities that will come along that are exciting, new and prosperous and you will let yourself know. Trust your gut.

9. Work hard, but remember to enjoy the present or the future will be worthless.
The world moves so fast now and everyone is so caught up in the rat race that they put their personal life on hold and focus on social/economical/financial success so much that they forget about what's truly important. Now don't get me wrong, everyone needs to make money, make the right friends, and secure their financial future. But remember that the love of you family and friends, and the experience that you miss out on in life can never be replaced and are far more valuable then volunteering to go into work on Sundays.

10. Status is nothing, character is everything.
Character defines humans. At the end of the day, people will remember you for your actions, for your honor, and for your ethic. Not for how high you are on the social ladder. Make decisions based on good character and you will be remembered longer and in a better light.

UFC 100 Review

Wow, I'm still reeling from UFC 100, what an amazing card! The main 4 bouts all could have been main events on other cards, but together they were explosive and set the stage for the upcoming match-ups for the next year or more.

Knockout of the night definetly has to go to Dan Henderson who obliterated Michael Bisping in the 2nd round.

But obviously the biggest fight of the night was Brock Lesner vs Frank Mir. I was really going for Mir in this one, but Brock is just too big for him. It looks Mir hasn't figured out Brock yet. I think Lesner vs Carwin will be a great fight, but there are rumors that Fedor Emelianenko is frothing at the mouth to fight Lesner and Dana White might be thinking about him coming over to the UFC. After Lesner's antics in the ring after his win, Dana White might be thinking that bringing Lesner in might not have been the best thing for the image of UFC...

And last but not least GSP vs Alves. As always GSP delivers and dominated the entire match with seemingly unstoppable takedowns, beautiful transistions and stamina that is unmatched in MMA. He actually pulled a groin muscle in the 3rd round but you can't even tell by the way he was fighting.

News: A Farce to be Reckoned With

I am not one to watch news on T.V, I think that it has lost all of it's credibility years ago and has not done anything in my eyes to remedy it. The fact that the editorial content would be biased based on the ideals of a demographic that is at home watching cable news astounds me.

Whatever happened to responsible reporting of the news, where you let the views form their own opinions and reporting just the facts like Walter Cronkite? It was in the early sixties that stereophonic sound started to hit the mainstream and bands went into the studio with a new platform to work with, catering the sound and moving in ways that were just not possible previously. Some attribute the whole psychedelic sound to stereo and the world changing music that came out of that decade. Just imagine listening to a Led Zeppelin album on a turntable for the first time in stereo, or Pink Floyd, or any of the fantastic artists of the era. Life changing to say the least.

I've been recently awakened after getting a really nice pair of headphones this year and after listening to a huge playlist of my favorite songs I was blown away. I haven't connected with music like that in a long time and it was awesome. There is something very liberating about pumping up the volume and hearing the every nuance of a song and discovering the ways the artist wants to direct you and little subtleties that are just lost on many listeners.

Here's a few headphones that I've checked out sorted by price.

High Range:
Sennheiser HD-595 Premier Headphone
These are very good headphones without getting rediculously overpriced. There are headsets out there that are for the devote audiophile and can run three times the price of these, but these are the upper crust for most listeners.

Mid Range:
Audio Technica ATH-M50 Professional Headphones
Great set for acurate reproduction of sound. They are designed for proffesionals so they are really comforatable and you can wear them at length. Good for when you have 7-12 music sessions.

Economical:
Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone
A much more economical set without a huge loss of quality. The diaphrams on these headphones go around the ear, canceling a lot of background noise and delivering a much richer sound. They're also rugged and can take a beating, which is a good thing since they aren't the cheapest ones on the market.

I hope that you get inspired by this and take time out to really listen to music, enjoy the experience and not to settle for convenient hardware.

As I watched the video I couldn't help but notice how much resistance he came against from all the analysts spewing the propaganda phrases that every thing is okay, there's nothing in the coolaid, stocks are up and wealth is up so we're okay. And he stood up to them and called it like he saw it, called them out on their b.s and predicted the year everything was going to go down the tubes.

It takes a strong man to stick by his convictions and he didn't blink an eye. Now remember, these analysts were soaking up the riches of the American public by promoting these companies and mortgage backed securities, and were making money hand over fist at their firms or in their own personal portfolios. So you could see how scared some of them were that he was discrediting the manufactured security that was holding the market together for so long, and how angry they got when he wouldn't back down.

The American public has gotten the idea that the only way to economic wealth for the country is through investments and spending. But as we all now know, living beyond your means and fostering investments that allow the public to do that is irresponsible. I think that in these time, with the bold changes that have been put through from the Obama administration that stability is in order, and look to change our ideas on our fiscal doctrine. We should take a step back and increase production, save money, pay back our creditors and stop borrowing money from other countries to further extend ourselves in debt on a system that can be easily toppled like a house of cards.

This guy is a genious and in my eyes should be running the Fed at this point. He's now running for a Senate seat in Connecticut against Chris Dodd. I really hope he takes his seat so we can get some sanity in the Senate.

If your interested and want to do some further reading you can read Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will Make Things Worse .

10 Must Have Books for Geeks

There are good books, and then there are geek books, a geek book in my eyes has to have a couple of qualifiers. First off it has to click with the geek masses, moreover it has to be a universal truth that it belongs in this category. The author has to really take it to another level regarding plot, detail of characters and the environment, details of technology etc. So here is the top ten.

10. The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes -- Neil Gaiman
This is one of my favorites in my collection. A surreal walk though a dramtic story following the character Dream. The story and illustrations are out of this world and they are highly addictive. Read one and you have to read them all.

9. Neuromancer 20th Anniversary Edition
-- William Gibson
This was the first Sci-fi book that I ever read that wasn't about shiny spaceships and galactic space fighters who saved the day. This was a gritty Sci-fi that follows a hacker who really knows his stuff.

8. A Wrinkle in Time -- Madeleine L'Engle
I read this when I was in the 5th grade I think and have fond memories. It's a must read for everyone, not just geeks.

7. I, Robot -- Isaac Asimov
One of the few Sci-fi writers that can totally geek out on every detail of fictional technology he created and still have you interested in the story. This novel is totally immersive and believable and questions the thin line of high technology and life.

6. Ender's Game -- Orson Scott Card
This book is enthralling, really well written, and follows a epic story involving 5 to twelve years old who are exceptionally bright and part of a large military academy. This book is written for younger readers but it's writing is so inviting it creates a fast read.

5. Dune (40th Anniversary Edition) -- Frank Herbert
The quinececial sci-fi book. Heinlein..
One of the most ground breaking novels of all time, Heinlein pushes social barriers and taboos while creating a unforgettable plot. This is not your normal sci-fi and remember this was written in the 50's before all the free love movement hippy mumbo-jumbo.

3. 1984 (Signet Classics) -- George Orwell
Thoroughly chilling novel. If you're not paranoid now, you certainly will be after you read this book. Tolkien
The best fantasy writing ever, in my opinion. The characters, environment, and details are so fleshed out that you feel like you're in a different world when you're reading it. Tons of characters, all with their own motivations and personalities and a history that are unrivaled in any other fantasy work.

1 The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy -- Douglas Adams
Don't panic! I've never enjoyed reading a book more than I did with HGTG. It had me laughing out loud, and pondering how much of a genius it takes to be this absolutely spot on with comedic timing, creative plots and characters and off the wall craziness. and a laughable court case with the mother who was file sharing I thought it due time to give my 2 cents on the matter.

Record companies need to rethink their idea of file sharing because the people that download music are music lovers, and potential lifelong customers. If you label them as criminals and ostracize them, then you just lost a huge segment of your demographics that will never see your band in concert, ever buy and album or a 99 cent download, ever buy a t-shirt, ever tell their friends to see you. Look at what happened to Metallica when they started suing Napster. The only thing that happened is that their fans who once saw the band as one that was on their side, sharing a passion against the system, become the system. And those fans including myself are gone forever.

The record industry needs to evolve with the times, it is a business, and as with every good business it detects trends and capitalizes on them. How many businesses would still be around if they kept to their original business model, some but not many.

There is a really intriguing project called Rockstar 2.0 created by Alex Cameron you can download the entire PDF here, which gives a different take on making money in an industry that has so many different people attacking it for money like piranhas.

Suing a mother for $2,000,000 for downloading 24 songs is absolutely ridiculous. If she couldn't afford 99 cents to download it, what makes you think she can afford $2,000,000 to pay you! This ineptness is why you got yourselves into the mess in the first place, and continuing to sue people to make examples of them is only taking valuable time and money away from finding a good solution to the problem. File sharing is not ever going to go away, no matter how many lawyers you hire. You can't sue everyone.

Star Trek (2009)

I know what you're thinking. Yes, this movie came out two months ago, but every self respecting geek blog has to have a Star Wars or Star Trek article in it somewhere. And seeing as how the only news worth hearing from the Star Wars camp would be an apology for episodes I & II then I'll have to settle for an dated Star Trek review.

It may shock some people to learn this, but I didn't watch the original Star Trek show. I know, boo, hiss. But before you get your communicator in a bunch remember that the show originally aired 13 years before I was born okay. That being said I did like The Next Generation, and Voyager, and I fully appreciate the original.

But honestly, J.J. Abrams knocked the ball out the galaxy when he made this movie. The special effects are amazing but not gaudy, the actors are unique but cast perfectly so they throw-back to the original characters as well.

I'm a sucker for a good action movie, but this one genuinely had me at hello. I found it really engaging and all my friends and family that saw it too, who had never been Trekies loved it and understood it. It's a must see in the theater and a must buy on Blu-ray or DVD.

5/5 Stars

About TZOG

It just so happens that I'm a geek, which works out really well now that I started this blog. Mostly everything that I do, I take to geek level. Whether it's computers, gadgets, history, literature, movies, music, games, economics, (I think you see where I'm coming from on this) I really get it, and can provide thought provoking articles that I hope will help enlighten readers and hopefully transfer the passion that I share for knowledge. That being said, it makes for really interesting reading. So I'll post a lot of tutorials, essays, reviews and all that jazz about everything in my geek-o-sphere. Oh yeah, I went there.
