I first heard The Low Anthem earlier this year with a spotlight that "All Songs Considered" did on some new artists and was blown away by track 1 Charlie Darwin. I immediately had to have the album and it proves to be a very rewarding experience. Lead singer Ben Knox Miller has a very dynamic range going from a deep whisper to a clean falsetto, while the accompaniment is extremely diverse with instruments ranging from a host of different strings, horns, wood blocks and echoing cell phones.
The style is hard to place, it seems to be a mixture of Folk, Americana, and some Rock influences but definitely has an old time feel to it. This was a welcomed change from the indie rock/pop kick that I've been into recently and was very nice to cleanse the musical palette with this album.
In 2009 they had a very successful year playing at some very notable venues like SXSW, Lollapalooza and the Glastonbury Festival.
This album is a must have and was one of my favorites this year.
